What is this about??

In the L/L writing class , we are learning how to write a literature essay. I choosed to write about " The prison" themes.

The prison written by Bernard Malamud is about Tommy Castelli who is a 30 year old man that has a candy shop and he feels that the place in a prison for him. This essay will analyses the theme 'hope for a change'' and '' life as a prison''.

The theme '' hope for a change '' represents Tommy finding something interesting and new to do in his life because he wanted to help and tell the little girl to stop stealing , but unfortunately he did not have the right words , he did not won't to scare her. For example in one moment of the story '' Tommy was afraid he would sound like a jerk and she would not take him seriously''. For example when he says '' He felt he ought to do something for her , one her to cut it before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it get started''.

The theme '' life as prison'' expresses the miserable life of tommy. He married a woman who doesn't loves and works in a place he hates because he works in a candy shop hours without resting and without holidays. '' There was his father cooking up a deal with Rosa Angellos old man that Tommy would merry her and the father in law , out of his savings , open a candy store for him to make a honest living''.

As a conclusion , I think that Tommy looks for a change in his life by being a good person helping the girl , but he realizes that he could not be another person or be free , he is a prisoner in his own life.
